When you visit the beautiful Oudtshoorn, you will see that there are many things to do. There is something for everyone; the adrenaline junkie, the culture vulture and even the family man. Here are a few things we recommend doing when in Oudtshoorn and you want to get the blood pumping.
1. Caving at the Cango Caves
Head on over to the picturesque Cango Valley, about 29km outside Oudtshoorn, to explore the magnificent Cango Caves. Choose between the heritage tour that takes you through a series of deep caverns with lots of stalactites, stalagmites and flow structures, or a longer adventure tour that has you crawling on your belly and shimmying around narrow tunnels. Just note that the adventure tour option is not for the faint of heart, the claustrophobic, the dodgy of knee or the too-generously endowed.
2. Zip Line at the Cango Caves
Fitting in beautifully with your Cango Caves visit and less than 1km away, head on over to the Cango Caves Zipline and slide side by side with your zipline buddy over a combined 900-meter course with magnificent views of the Swartberg Mountains and Little Karoo area. We highly recommend these exciting activities for active families travelling together.
3. MTB at Swartberg Country Manor
For cycling and walking fans, meander through the valley into beautiful surrounds of the Swartberg Pass. From gentle, leisurely excursions, to more rugged terrain there is something for everyone to enjoy. The slopes of the mountains reveal a richness of flora and fauna, a pleasure to see in any season. Ask us for more details on hiring bicycles to take your trip to the next level. Please note that a permit is needed to walk the Swartberg Pass, so please get in contact with us before your visit so that we can get everything in order with the Tourism office in town.
4. Croc Cage Diving at Cango Wildlife ranch (in season only)
If you thought shark cage diving was a little crazy, try croc cage diving. It’s a real adrenaline rush as you observe these scary, scaly, toothy modern-day dinosaurs from the safety of a cage. These underwater beats can be viewed at the Cango Wildlife Ranch which is considered a premier tourist attraction and conservation destination based in the heart of the Garden Route. The ranch is renowned for once in a lifetime encounters with rare and endangered animals while incorporating conservation through education obtained through years of experience and care.
5. Ostrich Riding at High Gate Ostrich Farm
If you are looking for something different to do when you visit the town of Oudtshoorn, why not try the Ostrich Riding adventure! This unique experience can be ticked off the bucket list at the High Gate Ostrich Show Farm situated in the beautiful Cango Valley. The guided tours include viewing of eggs, incubators and chicks (in season), feed the ostriches by hand, sit on or ride them (weight limit 75 kg) and stand on the eggs (no weight restrictions).
Staying active is easy in Oudtshoorn, be sure to tick all of the above activities from your bucket list and have a blast doing so. Once the activities are done, why not pop into Swartberg Country Manor’s renowned restaurant Patat for a delicious gin pairing to end off the day on a high note?
