What to do on Route 62

Route 62 is the tourist route stretching from the Western Cape to Eastern Cape that meanders between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, the Langkloof and Port Elizabeth. It offers the shorter, more scenic alternative to the N2 highway when traveling.

It’s an area of magnificent landscapes and towering cliffs, crystal clear streams and an abundance of trees and indigenous flora – all contribute to make Paarl, Wellington, the Breede River Valley, Klein Karoo and Langkloof some of South Africa’s most diverse regions. The ever changing colours of the majestic mountains, scenic passes, rivers, vineyards and orchards, as well as the multitude of attractions, will offer you an unforgettable adventure – whether this is in the physical sense or simply a kaleidoscope of scenic tranquillity.

The easily accessible towns, nestled along the valleys, all offer ample opportunity for discovery. From visits to wineries and game reserves, tribal art, cultural tours, museums and for the more adventurous: hiking trails and mountain climbing, 4×4 routes, canoeing, horse riding, even ostrich riding, fishing and caving.

Here is what we recommend you do while traveling on Route 62:

4×4 Adventure at Leopard Trail

This is one for the bucket list. They offer guided tours against the mountain slopes of the Langeberg with a breath taking view over the Breede River Valley. If you are traveling with a 4×4 and in need of a serious pitstop then this is just the place!

Breede River Boat Trip

The Breede River offers idyllic boat trips where the whole family can stretch the legs while on the road. Cool off with a swim in the water or try to catch some Bass fish. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

Donkey Trail

Die Hel in the Gamkakloof Valley was first inhabited by farmers in 1830. It was accessible only by foot until 1963 when a road was built winding from the Swartberg Pass down into this remote valley. Come experience how life was back then by taking a donkey trail along this route.

Ceres Zipline Adventures

This “foefieslide” adventure is situated in the lovely mountains surrounding the Ceres Valley.  A mere 1½ hours’ drive from Cape Town, it is the perfect breakaway from the hectic city life!  The Ceres Zipslide Tour takes place above the Koekedouw River with amazing rock formations. A perfect backdrop to a safe, fun and adrenaline-filled adventure!

Taste some delicious gin at Patat

For this one we suggest you have a designated driver who can enjoy the view, but not the gin. Our gin tasting is set against the backdrop of the beautiful Swartberg Pass, definitely a stop on your route that you don’t want to miss!
